Doing Our Best
26th Milton Keynes Coniston Cubs had a fantastic ‘Perplexing Puzzles’ session of Lego and Rubik’s cube solving. The puzzles-themed session was voted for by Coniston Cub members in the Autumn pack forum, owing to inspiration from Cub Mason who taught his dad how to solve a 3x3x3 Rubik’s cube as part of his Personal Challenge Award.
Akela was super proud of Coniston Cubs for demonstrating truly amazing Cub Scout values of working together, helping others, kindness, sharing of both resources and skills, teaching and trying their best. In this session, Young Leader Rikki Tikki Tavi awarded a total of 16 sixes house points to Coniston Cubs for demonstrating Scout values: eight for Black Six, five for Red Six, one for White Six, and two for Yellow Six.
Lego Creativity
With three exciting bases of Technic Lego, Lego blocks, and Rubik’s cube solving, Coniston Cubs had the freedom to choose their activity and the level of challenge that best suited their interests.
Some Cubs chose to complete Lego Challenge builds, whilst others worked together or individually to create a wide variety of Lego creations based on their imagination.
Sharing the Skill of Rubik’s Cube Solving
At the Rubik’s solving base, a team of Cub leaders, parents and Cubs who could solve a 3x3x3 Rubik’s cube passed on their skill by teaching other Cubs.
The session ended with an optional ‘Cube competition’ to see who could solve the Rubik’s Cube the fastest. Cubs really tried their best and this is what Scouting is all about – doing our best!
The winners (and their times) were as follows:
- Mason (first place) – solved the Rubik’s cube in 1 minute and 5 seconds,
- Mohi (second place) – solved the Rubik’s cube in 1 minute and 19 seconds,
- Oliver (third place) – solved the Rubik’s cube in 1 minute and 44 seconds.
Special commendations go to all the Coniston Cubs who took part and who had a go during the session, as they demonstrated the true spirit of trying. Akela’s attempt resulted in a solve at 2 minutes and 1 second, as Akela only recently learnt how to solve a Rubik’s cube as well.
Big thanks to the parents who helped teach Rubik’s solving at this session, and to the Cubs who were really kind and supportive in teaching others. A big shout out goes to Mohi, Oliver and Mason. Akela was also super impressed by YL Rikki Tikki Tavi who also learnt to solve a cub in the session.
As the age old saying goes, if true mastery is achieved by teaching something that you have learnt to others, then Coniston Cubs pack now have a core of Rubik’s cube masters! Better still, Akela has bought a set of six Rubik’s cube as a resource for the group, so Coniston Cubs can carry on practising and perfecting their skills in future Cubs sessions.
