October Edition
Welcome to the October Edition of the District Newsletter.

We'd Like to start with a B R A V O to the groups that have sent in items for the newsletter. It's great to be able to share the news from the "shires" of Milton Keynes. We want to hear more of your stories, your adventures, and your compassion in your communities.

As the Autumn term steers us towards Christmas we have a number of events that are important within society. The forthcoming Remembrance Day, which this year falls on the Sunday, and commemorates 100 years since the end of The Great War.

Wherever you observe the 2 minute silence, whether it's in your local community, at the train station, Centre:MK or at larger events organised by the Royal British Legion. It's important to reflect, and be thankful the sacrifice others made, so that we may Scout freely.

Scouting plays an important part in conflicted communities around the world such as Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. The World Organisation of Scout Movements, has projects, such as the Messengers of Peace that support projects in area of (post-)conflict. Worth a read, because sadly war and conflict remains part of our global story.

Recent surveys highlighted that Scouting encourages compassion and empathy, our Promises, Laws and ethos make us Scouts. Our compassion for others is very present in the new stories below, with hundreds of pounds raised for charities, and that's just the tip of an iceberg. We hope to bring you more stories of Milton Keynes Scouts supporting good causes in the coming newsletters.

Anyways, enough with the "Thought for the Day", on with the news!

Damboree Active Support Unit will be running Damboree 2019, which is as you may already be aware is promoting the Nights Away Scheme. Initially in 2018 we focused on Beavers and Beaver Leaders, camping in tents, and getting permits.

That hasn’t stopped for 2019, as leader churn suggests that Damboree will never run out of Beaver Leaders to support getting their Nights Away Camping Permit. So in order to challenge ourselved for 2019, we’re expanding to offer Cubs and Cub Leaders the chance to enjoy the fun that is Damboree, promoting camping and supporting leaders getting permits. More information can be found on our website https://www.damboree.co.uk

We currently have over 4000 Beavers & Cubs registered as interested for 2019, with over 150 Damboree events hinted at. Which is very exciting.

Growth and Development Update
The District Team has been working hard with the waiting list data to which resulted in a meeting held with the National Regional Development Team. Olly, Stephanie, Hillary & James travelled some distance to spend the evening with us, getting to grips with the waiting list numbers, which by any stretch are huge.

By joining up our waiting list data, National Deprivation Index statistics we’re able to provide a picture of where our challenges lie. Coupled with the interesting conversation with Ian Revill from the Milton Keynes Community  Foundation, there are opportunities and avenues available that are helped with the data we have.

We will be looking at a strategic growth programme which may involve new builds, new Groups, multi-venue Groups, Multi-Group venues, as long as they are financially sustainable it’ll be considered. Nothing if off the table if we can get it funded.

Waiting Lists
It’s been noticed that we’re not all using the waiting list in the same way. So I’ll list the steps below so people understand how it’s supposed to be used. If you have any queries or require access to you Manor waiting list, please email [email protected] and we’ll support you.

1.       Parent/Carer registers through the website
2.       Waiting List Admin suggests three nearest groups, and transfers the record to the relevant waiting list.
3.       Section Leaders/Group Admins offer a place, ensuring the “Group Offered & Offer Date” is updated to reflect the current status of the offer.
4.       When an offer is accepted the Waiting List record is SHARED with your OSM section, this negates the need to re-key in the data.
5.       When the young person is investerd the “Group Offered & Offer Date” column should be updated to reflect the investiture date.
6.       Waiting List Admin come along and tidy out the waiting list periodically to move investeds into an Invested List, so we can track the use/success of the Waiting List

Please ensure you follow this process, as it impacts all the other users of the waiting list, and from a GDPR perspective, we need to ensure its kept as accurate as possible

Please do not use local section or group waiting lists, as this skews the figures. If you need assistance in transferring your waiting list to the Manor waiting list, please get in touch [email protected]

Recruitment
This ties into the Waiting List, a number of parents will indicate whether they are willing to volunteer, if Sections and Groups want to offer places to those who have indicated they wish to volunteer, that is your prerogative. We’re not going to tell you who you offer places to, but there are parents there willing to volunteer. If you don’t recruit them, when it comes time to open a new group, or start a new section, those parents will end up being tapped first, so existing Groups & Sections are getting first dibs.
IT Update
Please remember that Online Scout Manager is now paid for by County, if your group needs the voucher code please contact [email protected] and we’ll send that to you.

Office365 is available to all adults in a role of Section Assistant or higher, and to Group Executive and Group Administrative volunteers. This will help groups with GDPR compliance, and offers a number of collaborative software bits to help groups store data centrally, share data judiciously and collaborate across Groups & Manors effectively. In the New Year we’ll be running Office365 sessions on topics such as Calendars, planning tools, etc. This will be delivered by a new Active Support Unit, name to be confirmed, which will be tasked with providing the IT Services for the District as part of its Service Agreement that’s being drawn up currently.

Having supported this event for a number of years when I worked full time, and the Quarries raising money for this wonderful cause last year, the question we asked those close to us was ‘do we do this again’ and the answer was a unanimous ‘yes’. What can we do to help and with a little forward planning the date was in the diary – 29th September in the Hub at the Quarries.

Facebook has the evidence or carrot cake, chocolate cake, cupcakes, brownies, lemon cake, chocolate orange cake (with a hint of surprise!), fruit loaves and lots more. The bunting was out as well as the balloons and the A board announced that we were open for business.

Even the District Commissioner arrived for afternoon tea and a piece of cake as well as a local Guide leader who took away the chocolate cake (yes the whole cake) for the leaders and 24 cupcakes.

We welcomed Scouters as well as friends and Quarries neighbours to the Hub and everyone went away having eaten cake and making a donation to this worthwhile cause.

We raised £141.26 plus a couple of people who signed the gift aid form which will earn them extra income.

Thank you to all who donated and helped to make this event a success.

Not to be outdone, 1st Wolverton held their coffee morning for Macmillan and raised a £160. They would like to thank all the people that donated cakes and also everyone that attended to make the event a success.
Recently MK Beavers had a day out of adventure to Gulivers Land with a total of 180 people attended the weather was good and enjoyed by all well done all of a good day had by all, and looking for the next event  Night Hike on 9th November.

I would like to thank all the Leaders and Helpers that helped to make the day a success.

Scouts Skills Weekend

The annual District Scout Skills weekend was held on the 28th – 30th September. The event was well attended by groups from across the district with over 30 Scouts staying for the weekend!

Scouts got to learn some valuable skills, and the District Commissioner took a leap of faith. One the first day, Scouts put their pioneering skills to the test building a rope bridge. They had to ensure their knots where good as once built, Scouts got the chance to go across it.

Later in the afternoon, Scouts got to bake cakes in a BBQ oven. While results varied from Masterchef to Kitchen Nightmare, there were still some tasty cakes by the end! The day was then topped off toasting marshmallows over the fire and a Camp’s Got Talent competition.

After a second cold night, which Scouts earnt their Frosty Certificate (camping two nights in a row with frost on the ground) we got to warm up with a little fire lighting practise. It’s amazing how many different ways you can light a fire without matches!

Hopefully see you all at the next District Skills Weekend.

District Scouts Team

The Cast and Crew of MK Gang Show entertained lots of people over the three shows, and wow what a show.

The Junior Cast took us on a journey to meet the wizard of oz and the Seniors took us from our goodnight scene to Under the Sea in uv plus lots, lots more.

Our show this year also included a tribute to World War 1, as we commemorate 100 years. We are very grateful for the support by The Royal British Legion, who joined us on stage.

We are now in our review phase, to determine what we want to do next year. We are keen to speak to anyone that would like to help MK Gang Show Grow.

If you would like some more info please contact our Business Manager Jason Raggett on [email protected]
Our Bronze D of E Explorers
Jambo on 25 Mile Challenge
Four of our Jamboree Participants took to the parks of MK on the Parks Trust 25 Mile Challenge. They completed this over 2 days and all funds raised have gone to thier Jamboree Fund.

The weather started a bit rubbish but this did not dampen their spirits.

Well Done.
Hopefully you are aware of next year’s County camp, 24th – 28th May 2019 on the Claydon Estate grounds, with a spy theme and activities being booked weekly.

Information is regularly coming out from the County office for Scouts and Guides but to help with the organisation Kim Monro has taken the role of Sub camp leader/coordinator for Milton Keynes to help with questions, bookings and general information.

As a Scout District we are looking to run coaches for day trips and help with other aspects including transport and equipment to help to coordinate any of your requirements.

You can get updates from the team on Facebook - Mission:00Bucks or contact me (Email address in the District Directory) directly as I have been given the Mission spy handbook......

The booking form needs to be returned to the County office ASAP with a deposit, Kim can email a form if you haven’t received one yet.

It should be a fantastic event with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Brownies, Guides and Rangers from across the County getting together for some serious fun.
