I just firstly wanted to say a big thank you all for doing such a great job with our Cubs this term, despite the ongoing challenges of COVID. Keeping Scouting going is so vitally important, now perhaps more than ever, for our young people and this simply wouldn’t be possible without all your efforts and the time you all give to running and preparing your sessions for our Cubs.
As you know, we had planned a District Hike and Campfire for Sunday 12 December, which I know many of you were looking forward too and had signed up for. However, regretfully and after much thought, I have decided to postpone this event until next year. I am sure you will have also seen the recent change in readiness level from Scouts HQ and with this in mind, I hope you understand this decision.
Although the risk of transmission is minimal outside, I personally feel there are too many risks attached now to make this event viable. I am particularly concerned regarding the rising COVID infection rates, lack of facts and data about the new variant Omicron and the event’s proximity to Christmas. I would hate anyone’s Christmas to be put at risk, or any Cub, leader or their family to fall ill up to or during the festive period because of attendance at this event.
This was not an easy decision to make, but I had to put the safety of the young people and our leaders at the forefront of this decision. I am so sorry for any disappointment caused and also for the time and trouble you as leaders have gone through to get your Cubs involved. Rest assured - this event is postponed rather than cancelled and I will look to re-arrange this event in February/March time when I am hoping more is known about the new variant and infection rates are on the decrease.
Once again, please do accept my apologies for the inconvenience caused for postponing this event.
I hope you all have a restful Christmas and well deserved break over the Festive period.
Take care
Claire
