MK Hogwatch (MKHW) is a local citizen science project run by The Parks Trust’s Outdoor Learning and Biodiversity teams concerning the UK’s favourite spiny mammal, the hedgehog. MKHW project involves recording hedgehog numbers using footprint survey tunnels over a consecutive 5 day period either in a private garden or Parks Trust park.
Hedgehogs have lost much of their natural habitat and food sources. By finding out more about where hedgehogs are and aren't doing well in MK, we can help work to raise awareness and promote habitat creation and protection so local populations flourish.
We provide all equipment, free of charge including detailed instructions on how to carry out the surveying. The project is only 5 consecutive days long so does not require a huge amount of time from individuals and they can pass on the tunnel to another scout each week during the surveying season to collect as much data as possible from different locations.
After the survey season has finished, we can provide the groups with a map of the data they, and other citizen scientists around MK collected that will help us protect hedgehogs.
