Youth Team Update

November has been a busy month for both of us. We have visited a cub section and 2 scouts’ sections to run You shape Award sessions. We both started our visits at 1st Olney Cub Pack where we did a session with them all about the new Youshape award. We got them to think about planning a session where they could teach another patrol a skill that they had but the other patrol didn’t have. This session went really well, and all the Young People were interested in the Youshape award. Our next visit was The Saints scout’s session in Bletchley, we got the scouts to plan a camp without any leaders present so the Scouts had to plan everything from the Risk assessments to the activities and everything in between. Each patrol had some really interesting camps and wanted to take it further and continue progressing through the Youshape Award. Our last visit of this month was to Furzton Scout Group. In this Youshape session we got them to think how they could Lead a session, how they could plan a session and how they could represent the section or their patrol. We then got them to think about issues in our world today and how we as scouts can do our bit to help to solve or reduce this problem. Once they had come up with their problem, we asked each patrol to plan a session for the new year based on teaching the other scouts about their problem and how to solve it. More information on the award can be found here:

Over the next term and taking us up to Easter, myself and Euan will be looking to visit groups and run You Shape sessions with your young people.

Following the formation of the Quarries Scout Active Support Unit, last Saturday saw the presentation of the District Scout Active Support scarves which has the Quarries badge on the back. There are currently 14 crew who are on site most weeks come rain or shine working either in the shop, tuck shop, maintenance work, grass cutting and the day to day running of the site behind the scenes. They will also be seen helping to support District events when necessary.

Growth and Development Update!
I've been working on improving the volunteering onboarding flow, because it's not as effective, or measurably effective as I'd like, and there are multiple exit points with no follow up currently, so need to bring it into a much tighter feedback loop.
As part of my work looking at fixing the waiting list management (OSM is not going to be the waiting list tool long term, it just doesn't work as effectively for us as we need it to.) I came across monday.com. They have given us some freebie licenses, so I am using them to re-engineer how we manage volunteer enquiries from initial contact to 6 months after they join the movement.
Below is the flow diagram, and screen shots, so you can see how it's working, and how it's going to work, and where the Groups fit into this.
The other important thing is that we can show the District Exec, County Development Team, RST, and most importantly Groups where we're having success with placements, but also addressing areas of concern to improve retention, because if we can improve retention, we don't need to recruit-to-replace so many, which means we can recruit-to-grow.
This doesn't take over from Groups recruiting internally, it's a way for the District Growth & Development Team to manage external enquiries, and responses from waiting list mailouts.
I know HQ are also working on the Volunteer Journey and managing enquiries in the new Compass replacement tool, but that's at least 12 months away, and we can't wait that long.
I needed to do this better, so we can support you better.
Waiting list Management improvements are next on my agenda, alongside some other improvement programmes.
