Middleton Scout Joshua Fuller has now spent more than 730 nights under canvas — and he’s not stopping yet.
At just 12 years old, Joshua has swapped his bedroom for a tent in his garden in Milton Keynes. What started as a year-long challenge has now stretched to two full years — through wind, rain, snow, and even a family holiday to Ibiza where he pitched his tent in the sun.
Joshua is raising money for Willen Hospice in memory of his grandparents, who both received care there in their final weeks. So far, he’s raised over £8,000 towards his £10,000 goal — and he’s planning to sleep outside for 1001 nights to break a world record.
“It was harder in the first year,” Joshua said. “I had fewer blankets and a smaller tent. But I’ve got used to it now. It’ll feel strange going back to a bed!”
He’s spent two birthdays and two Christmases in his tent and stuck it out through everything from hailstorms to the hottest June on record. Even on holiday, Joshua didn’t take a break — instead, he took his tent along with him.
Joshua’s efforts have earned him an MK Inspiration Award, and a lot of admiration from friends, family, and the local community. His mum says she sometimes worries about stormy nights, but “he’s fast asleep before his head hits the pillow — he’s a pro at this now.”
Willen Hospice, which only receives 13% of its funding from the NHS, says it relies on people like Joshua. “We need to raise over £10 million a year,” a spokesperson said. “Support from young fundraisers like Joshua is absolutely vital and makes such a difference.”
So far, Joshua has spent more than 750 nights outside. He’s pledged to stay out for hundreds more — a few stars, a tent-shaped cake, and one very determined Scout at a time.
